Ashley Nicolette Frangipane better known professionally as Halsey was born on September 29, 1994 in Edison, New Jersey. Her stage name originated as a reference to Halsey Street where she once lived in Brooklyn and began writing music. It is also an anagram of her first name.
Throughout her childhood, Halsey and her family would move around, doing different jobs to survive. Eventually getting Halsey used to the idea of packing up and leaving and never having people who actually knew her. In high school, she went through tough times being bullied but made her place in theatre and also was the yearbook editor. She was named the “Best Artist”.
Even after getting entry to a reputed design school, Halsey had to resort to community college as she couldn’t afford it. She would often live in one of New York’s many homeless shelters or with her grandmother.
It was in Halsey Street in Brooklyn that she finally felt like she was a part of something bigger and started writing music. Halsey was only seventeen when she began posting videos on social media during 2012. Eventually she met a producer at a party who liked her voice and asked to collaborate with him. As a result, the song “Ghost” was released on SoundCloud and within hours gained online popularity, and she was subsequently contacted by several record labels, with the song eventually charting and going on radio.
In October 2014, Halsey released her debut EP, Room 93 and promoted her next album by touring with larger acts. The following year, she released her debut studio album, Badlands which included hits like Colors and New Americana. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Several tracks from the album were certified Platinum and had a single which was certified Gold. In order to promote the album, Halsey embarked on her debut headlining world tour.
In 2016, Halsey was featured in the The Chainsmokers’ single “Closer” which gained massive commercial success while topping charts of over 20 countries and granting Halsey greater prominence.
A year later, Halsey released her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom which debuted at number one in US and Canada. The album consisted hits like Now or Never (which was number seventeen) and Bad At Love (which was at number five).
Halsey teamed up with Khalid and sang for Benny Blanco’s debut single “Eastside” in 2018, which topped charts around the world and also peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Later that year, she released her single “Without Me” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Halsey recently announced that she’s working on a new album which will speak from her heart and help those who deal with troubles as she once did. The album is set to release end of 2019.
Halsey’s achievements consist of a Billboard Music Awards for Top Collaboration (2017), Billboard Women in Music Awards for Rising Star (2016), iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards for Artist For Change (2018) including many nominations; six times at Teen Choice Awards, five times at Billboard Music Awards, three times at iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards, four times at iHeartRadio Music Awards, twice at MTV Europe Music Awards and once each at GLAAD Media Awards, Global Award, Grammy Awards one Radio Disney Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, NME Awards and People’s Choice Awards.
She is involved in suicide prevention awareness and sexual assault victim advocacy.
