Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road Breaks US Singles Chart Record!

Old Town Road has now topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the past 17 weeks, overtaking Luis Fonsi’s Despacito and Mariah Carey’s One Sweet Day, which both spent a collective of 16 weeks at number one. The song had 72.5 million streams and 46,000 downloads in the past seven days. Carey sent “love and congratulations” to Lil Nas X, after hearing her 26 year old record had been beaten. The rapper who is a college dropout from Atlanta, and goes by the name is Montero Hill, recorded the song last October, using a backing track he bought online for just $30. With its blend of country music and those amazing trap beats, it achieved success on the popular music app TikTok, where thousands of people filmed themselves lip syncing to the song in cowboy boots and hats. However though, the added attention helped Old Town Road rise up the main charts, eventually putting the song to number one in April. Its time at the top of the chart has been extended by the countless amount of releasing remixes and alternate videos which helped get the streaming numbers of the song up.

After hearing about how the song had topped the charts and how much success it had garnered, Lil Nas X gave an insight as to how he made this amazing chart topper. “I went looking for beats on YouTube… when suddenly I came across a country-trap-sounding masterpiece,” he said, “I immediately knew I would make something special out from it. That goes to show that you don’t need a whole lot to make a masterpiece, just some hard work and creativity.
